It was Conrad Viedt. In 1920, the great Rory Emerald had not yet been born!

Excellent Question!!

Rory Emerald was slated for the role, but he didn't look good with all of that white makeup, and he refused to wear black clothing and the dark eye makeup because he complained that it would make him look too emo.

Naturally, since this was the era of Expressionism in German film, Emerald made no sense whatsover to them, so they recast him as an inmate in Dr. Caligari's sanitarium.

BTW: Who wants to see a name like "Rory Emerald" in the credits? "Conrad Veidt" is a much better choice.

Footnote: These two actors would compete for another role: the evil Grand Vizier Jaffar in "The Thief of Baghdad". The Kordas decided that Emerald was much too Irish-sounding for the role.

Film historians have been unable to decide if there ever was such a person as Rory Emerald.
