Have you done a campus visit with one of your parents? Perhaps if you go and they can see your obvious enthusiasm, they'll relent.
Also, cost is a prohibitive factor. Going out of state can really jack up the cost of school. I can certainly understand them not wanting to pay for out of state tuition.
What it comes down to is if you want to do it so badly, you have to be willing to do it without their financial help. It is, after all, their money and they can do with it as they wish. It's going to require working while in school, or taking time off to save up the money.
Sounds like it's time for a rational, mature chat with mom and dad.

I lived in New York because of a job situation and, I was from California... Man! Everything was "a dream", an awesome dream to go to New York... What-a-mistake!
One thing is leaving in N.Y. and another is visiting it. Living in N.Y. full time is an awful, painful experience... I know. I lived it.
The west and the east are total-opposite-countries. No exaggeration. You'll be miserable as myself along many others I knew and ended up moving back from where they were from. Even the most common things are ridiculously expensive, people are forceful to the point of being rude and obnoxious. And, I could go on and on and on...
Stay in California for your, your-very-own-good.
Not just New York has good colleges. Do you know that Californian Colleges such as UCLA, University of California and Cal State Fullerton are among The Very Top Educational Institutions in America? Fullerton is the 4th in the Nation and the others have international reputations around the world... I know.
Think very hard and realistically about it. Please do. It is your future. It is your life. And, I, just as your family do, want the very best for you while you're so lucky for living in one the greatest places to have an education in. Think of the possibilities...
For some reason people from around the entire world go to California for an education... Think about it.

Firstly your parents may be right.
On the other hand some courses (or options in courses) are only available in certain places.
So, how to convince your parents. Hypnosis works as well as blackmail.
On the other hand you might try this.
Look at what you want to study. Look at NYU and local colleges and compare them.
Then sit down with your parents and tell them that you have been looking at universities.
Explain your reason for going to NYU but also show them that you have been considering their suggestion. This shows that it is a mature decision and let them warm up to it over time.

if you want it badly enough then get a job and work your way thru college on your own. if you're not willing to do that, then it really isn't that important is it. my parents were only willing to pay my college if it was for becoming an attorney. i wanted to be in health care administration. it took me a couple of years more than a regular student. but i worked my butt off to get what i knew was what i wanted. they never gave in and neither did i. if you aren't willing to go the distance for it - then you don't deserve it. and it may be that if they see you are willing to do it on your own. they might just help you out after they see you being independent. ya never know. but do what you know will make you happy because a career, a job, your adult and majority of healthy and happy years is on the line. and what is so special at NYU???? justify your decision. good luck.. i am a happy camper and i did it on my own. that might be why i kept getting promotion after promotion. life is grand if you live it the way you want.

Beg, or just go to a different college. I mean your parents have worked their asses off for you for 18 years, and you want them to work even harder for about another 4? I say college is college man in the end you get the same paper saying you majored in this or that and you can work isn't that all you really need?

Don't ask your parents to pay for your dreams; ask them to pay only as much as they would have given you to go to school in California, and work three or four jobs and take out loans for the rest. But I warn you that ten years from now while you are still paying off those loans, you may look back and see that they were right...

First, be sensible, can they arise with the money for it? NYU is between the costliest faculties interior the rustic and has countless the worst financial help. If that's no longer the issue, basically take them to flow to, do your study on their classes and clarify the way it terrific meets your needs.

you could try threatening to just not go to college at all if they don't let you go where you want.
