Is this has been going on for quite some time you should see a doctor. If you don't have a regular sleep schedule that can also make it hard to fall asleep. Train yourself to go to bed around a certain time every night and that should help if you haven't tried that.

Melatonin-not sure if this is the correct spelling. It's sold over- the-counter & works well. I use benadryl, but it leaves me in a kind of fog in the morning.
You could have the old remedy of a glass of milk & an open face turkey sandwich. This combo has lots of L-tryptaphan. You can buy this in tablets, also
over-the-counter.
The herb valerian is good & said to be a natural form of valium. I heard thiis from an herbalist.
I listen to books on tape with the light off. It works a lot faster than trying to fall asleep in front of the TV & is less disturbing.
If you have a doctor who will prescribe trazadone. It leaves you feeliing rested in the morning. My friend takes Ambien. It takes a prescription & is very popular right now. I don't know much about it, except that it is fairly new & they've advertised the heck out of it.

Do you have this problem all of the time? I usually only sleep under 4 hours a day, which isn't a problem for me. When people sleep at night, they usually only get 2-4 hours of beneficial R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. The problem is that it usually takes 6-10 hours for most people to get those 2-4 hours of R.E.M. I go into a R.E.M. state almost immediately, so I have no problems with feeling tired afterwards. I actually HATE sleeping. It is such a waste of time. Think about it: if you sleep 8 hours a day, when you turn 30, you've slept for 10 years of your life!!! That is rediculous!!!!

Don't drink any caffeine. Also, take a nice walk after dinner. Sometimes lack of exercise can do it.
Also, you might want to get your thyroid checked. That happened to me quite often plus I was gaining a HUGE amount of weight even when I followed my own advice. I couldn't sleep at night, and I would be dragging all day. Your thyroid does have control over some of the symptoms if that is the case.

ok first the obvious.
do you drink alot of coffee? coca cola? any drinks with caffeine?
if yes. stop drinking them after 12 in the day. the caffeine will throw your body clock out.
next, do you stay up late and wake up late? an easy way to wake up early is to go to bed early. if you stay up all night and watch tv forget it...
ok next is if you have problems in your life. you often find it;s hard to sleep if you have things troubling you. work out your problems, sleep will follow.

Juice an apple and celery together and drink it sometime after dinner, but not too close to bedtime. Should do the trick!

See your dr. You can also have a checkup at that time (in addition to talking with him/her about your sleep problems). If you call him on Monday, it will not be too soon.
