I've been asked to do some promo artwork for a company. The artwork will be pictures with single characters and multiple characters respectively. A single character picture takes around 15 hours to complete. Some people have told me to charge by the hour, but I think it would be more fair to charge a flat rate based on how many characters are in the picture (I don't do backgrounds). Thanks for any suggestions.

Yeah giving a flat rate would be better than charging by the hour.

You need to make sure that if you charge a flat rate, the hourly rate is fair. If you charge $150 flat rate and it takes you 15 hours to do, then you have only been paid $10 hour. Is that fair???

My aunt is a professional artist and she works it out like this: materials used + effort/time = ? x 2 = ammount charged.

find out what others doing similar work are charging. you must offer competitive pricing if you are to be successful over the long term.

find out the asking average of couple of people doing the same job. it usually depends on the demand, materials, and how much time spent.

Clients will not appreciate anything that they pay too little for. They will only value that which they paid good money for.
