The West was almost always a victory area for the Union Forces. East of the Appalachians the results were mixed. Early on the Confederates did very well. From Antietam on the Union Forces began to improve in the East. Many believe that Gettysburg was the pivotal battle of the war, I however, believe that Vicksburg was the key to Union victory. Not much said in the Eastern press, it was a long way off and little news got East quickly. Grant pulled off one of the great military attacks in World history. Detached from his supply line, crossed the Mississippi south of Vicksburg, surprised the Confederate forces, marched to Jackson, Mississippi and took the town then turned west down the road to Vicksburg which he put under siege. Vicksburg fell just as the Union victory was occurring at Gettysburg.

East. The Union lost many of the first battles. The Union, under Grant, kicked *** in the west though. (The 'west' was actually like through Tennessee and...Arkansas and stuff. That was the west at that point.)

The east most assuredly. In fact it was the western theatre that the Union would shine and start the dissolution of the Confederacy which culminated at the victory of Vicksburg.Throughout the Civil War it was Lee's Army of Northeen Virginia which harassed the Union armies under several commanders.
