these things are not flat like centipedes or round like millipedes. the only thing they have in common with either species is that they have many legs and move remarkably fast.

You ought to note the division of the body into parts, and count whether legs are more than 6 in number, see whether they are winged or not. These observations will enable you tell whether they are insects or not. Many legged means they are myriapods. They are either millipedes or centipedes.
To find out whether they are millipedes or centipedes see the whether legs are two pairs per body segment or one pair and whether the body is cylindrical or flattened a bit.

I think those might be what I had in my old house. They're really fast, silver/gray, between 1 - 1 1/2 inches long and are more active at night. I used to think that they were silverfish, but someone corrected me recently. I finally did find out what they were though...they're called 'house centipedes'....
