With 1 game left they could still end in a tie with San Diego. Why would they not have to play a game to break that tie?

Arizona has 90 wins, San Diego 89, Colorado 88, Philadelphia 88, New York 88. With only one game left, the Padres might catch and tie the D'backs, but no other team can.

If San Diego DOES win Sunday (90 wins) and Arizona loses, one of them is the NL West champion and the other the NL wildcard team. Since they both would advance to the playoffs, no tiebreaker game is needed; the tie is broken on paper, and Arizona gets it by having won the season series with SD, 10-8. The Padres get the wildcard berth, the Rox go home, and the Phils and Mets settle their East title between themselves.

If San Diego loses, Arizona wins the West outright no matter what happens in their last game. The wildcard will get sorted out depending on what the other contenders do, but it will probably require at least one playoff game (unless they all lose, leaving SD as the only 89-win team).

Ergo, Arizona is the 2007 NL West champion.

since you answered mine, I will answer yours...and the same question about the NL East--why do the Mets and Phils have a playoff game if they tie?
