AZ is 90-71; SD is 89-72. If AZ loses and SD wins, they will have identical records of 90-72; why no playoff game? In NL East, Mets and Phils are tied; if both win or both lose, there will be a playoff game Mon. Explain why the west division is different.

Arizona 90 wins
San Diego 89

entering Sunday

Possible results:
AZ, SD both win -- Arizona wins West (91 wins against 90)

AZ, SD both lose -- Arizona wins West (90 wins against 89)

AZ wins, SD loses -- Arizona wins West (91 wins against 89)

AZ loses, SD wins -- tied with 90 wins, but since no other team can make 90 wins, one of the two wins the West and the other gets the NL wildcard berth. Since both will advance to the postseason, the tie is broken on paper and not on the diamond. The first tiebreaker method is head-to-head record, and Arizona won this year, 10-8. Arizona wins West, San Diego gets wildcard.

No matter what happens Sunday, Arizona wins the West.

OK. If the D'Backs and Padres tie at 90-72, one would have the NL West and the other would have the Wild card. Because both would be going to the playoffs, the tiebreaker is their record against each other. The same thing happened in 2005 when the Red Sox and Yankees tied with the best records in the AL, but the Yankees had the better record against the Red Sox. The Yankees got the AL East and the Red Sox got the Wild Card. The Phillies and Mets can tie for the East and the Wild Card if they both win, but only if the Padres lose, setting up a 3 way tie--4 way if the Rockies also win. If the Phillies and Mets both lose Sunday, the Padres are the Wild Card, regardless of what they do and the Phillies and Mets would have a one game playoff. Did that help?

Ha. I just asked the same question and then saw yours. If you ask me Baseball's tiebreakers just don't seem to make sense.
