I beleive the NHL will not allow Downey to play for his AHL team the "Phantoms" until his suspension is served. Unfortuntely for the Flyers, they are now forced to call him up for 20 games for him to serve his suspension before he can actually get called back down to the minors and play hockey again. But just for shits and giggles I'd like to see Philly keep him on for 2 more games so he can play the Ottawa Senators again. That would make for an interesting game. He wouldn't make it out of Ottawa alive.

Downie's suspension MUST take place while he is on the NHL roster.
Last week Holmgren said that the AHL would honour the suspension. Friday, Campbell said that Downie was free to play in the AHL, that his suspsension would be served while he was on an NHL roster.
So, if I were Philadelphia, I would leave him on the roster, let him serve the suspension, and then let him start his career on even footing. He's a good kid, a key member of two Canadian Junior Gold medallists, etc.
We all make make a bad judgement call every now and then.

The news said earlier that the NHL will decide if his suspension will apply in the AHL, or only when he gets called up to the NHL. Either way hurts him, obviously.

Actually, he is not Eligible to play with the Phantoms, so until he comes back to the NHL his suspension is on a stand still, it only counts for NHL games.

Holmgren (Philly GM) was quoted as saying that they would honour the suspension last week but that was before the suspension was handed down I believe. I have not heard since.
