Thank you for your concerns but after 19 years of dissidents rubbing shoulders with politicians in Washington, successfully made US and the west impose trade sanctions, the result is we have a stronger military now and more stubborn and filthy rich generals.

They will not give up their wealth and power now.
Our country course would have been on the right tract by now if sanctions were not imposed.

Look at Thailand. Bengladesh and Pakistan, no proper democracy yet and there are no sanctions and economy can go ahead as usual.

Shame on you all! but I thank you for your concerns.

Go to the 'Reporters Beyond Borders' website and donate to them, if you can...

They are making sure to investigate what will happen to the monks in prison...

The media in Burna is heavily censored so they need our help.

I have already written to the vice president, 2 chinese consulates and the UN...

I am buddhist and it hurts to see monks in saffron robes being beaten and imprisoned when they haven't done anything wrong...

I don't trust that they will not be murdered behind closed doors.

This is a very good question. I have friends that are citizens of Burma and Have gone to Thailand to see them. Some of them have talked to members of congress for several years, yet nothing seems to get our government involved in anything besides giving lip service...at least lately, there has been more of that.

I think the best way for a caring person to help is to contact government leaders and express your concerns. Visit web sites maintained by groups seeking change in Burma and see what they suggest. Do a search for the Karen National Union. They are one of the groups resisting SLORC (State Law and Order Council).

There is a very good movie that shows what happened in the '80s when the democratically elected government tried to take their seats of power and the military junta (SLORC) prevented it and opened fire on protesting students. The movie is "Beyond Rangoon."

The students fled to the mountains along the border with Thailand and started working with the hill tribes there in their fight against the junta.

China is a close ally of SLORC and has sway over them. Pressure on China could help.

The information that has been provided by the major media is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The murder and oppression of the military junta in Burma is extensive and exceedingly brutal. I have seen photos of teachers and villagers with their hands tied behind their backs, floating in a river with a bullet hole in each head.

When UNOCAL was building its pipeline through Burma to Thailand, SLORC military incursions into the area increased in frequency and brutality. The army would force villagers to become unpaid porters, kidnap young men for military service and attack villages they felt supported the resistance.

The Thai government should be helping the people of Burma resist, but they are too interested in economic issues associated with Burma. Perhaps pressure on Thailand would help.

The U.S. is very closely allied with Thailand both politically and economically. If the U.S. congress or other government wanted to assist the Burmese people, pressure on Thailand may be required due to Thai reluctance to upset SLORC.

For those persons that will say, "Let them settle it themselves" or "We can't police the world," I would submit that it is easy to sit there and say that when you have lived in relative freedom your entire life, have plenty to eat and your children are relatively safe. If you believe in freedom, you must know that if free people sit by while another man suffers for freedom, it threatens the freedom of all men.

The Burmese people have not, to my knowledge, asked for help in fighting their oppressors. They are perfectly willing to...and are fighting SLORC even though their enemy is very well armed by China. What they really need is for the world to stop ignoring their plight and stop "dancing with the enemy" for economic gain.

I saw with my own eyes the Burmese military invade 15 kilometers inside Thailand while attacking refugee camps inside Thailand. The Thai military stood and watched. The Thai government was apparently concerned about its stock market if the word of this were made public.

The so called "Free World" does not...should not send troops to fight for the Burmese people. They should, however; at least stop providing SLORC any way of sustaining itself economically and militarily. Sending some weapons and ammunition would help, but they don't need troops.
