I think it's part of a preprogrammed communication system we're born with. I mean, when a baby cries, sometimes you can't tell why, but you know it's upset, right? Nobody teaches babies to cry, they just do. It's the same way with smiling.
Of course, one must take into consideration that it works the other way, too-smiling releases happy chemicals in the brain, kind of like natural anti-depressants. Don't know if that tells you anything.

That's like why do we scream when we get shot in the arm or why do we frown and/or cry when we are sad. It's human nature. It's what makes us. When we show expressions like that. It's also a sort of communication, showing signs of how we are feeling.

Hi!!
We do all this things for the same reason that we cry when we hurt.
This is the way we react to our feelings or thoughts.
The same way when one is not thinking about anything specific, and has no expression on the face, because there is nothing, no thoughts, or action to react to it!
GOD bless you;
A.Z.

because that's the way it is.. we've got to smile when we are happy, cry when we're sad etc... how would it look if one laughs when he is hurt?
but there are some people in this world who enjoy pain - masochists...
