You have the right idea of removing 1/4 of the water and replacing it (with water that's about the same temperature and that's been treated for chlorine or chloramine, which ever your water company uses to treat your water).

Rather than dipping it out with a cup, it's better to use a siphon so tou clean any debris (fish poop, food, etc.) from the gravel. This will reduce the amount of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate overall in the tank, because these will be released by decomposition if the material is allowed to stay in your tank.

You can buy a gravel vacuum, or make one yourself from a clean soda bottle and piece of tubing - just cut the very bottom off the bottle, and put a hole through the cap big enough to put the tubing into securely.

I would suggest buying a siphon (from the pet store) or a piece of flexible plastic tubing (from the hardware store). Put one end of the tube in the tank and suck briefly on the other end (stop before the water gets to your mouth!). Put that end of the tube into a bucket or in the sink (if it reaches). When the water level in the tank reaches the level you want it to; remove the tubing from the tank. Using a siphon allows you to suck up (or vacuum) the debris in the gravel at the bottom of your tank (or off of the bare bottom of your tank if you don't use gravel). Simply place the the tank end of the tube into the gravel then pull it out, shake the gravel out of it, and place it into the gravel again. Repeat until you have drained 25% of your water. When you are adding water to the tank, make sure you add a product that will remove the chlorine or chloramine that is added to the water by your local utility company to the tank (you can ask for a suitable product at your local pet store).

Since you have a 10 gallon aquarium you will only need take out 2.5 gallons of water weekly, then replace the water you have taken out with treated water using a dechloranation product such as Prime, Start right etc... make sure the water is the same temp. as the aquarium water, I use a old water jug (1 gallon) I don't reccomend usin old milk jugs though. Need more help? Jusr E-Mail me! Adress is on the site.

Check out the water change section on the site below. Basically, you change 2.5 gallons of water from your tank with 2.5 gallons of fresh tap water, treating it to dechlorinate it. While removing the water, you want to suction the junk out of the gravel.
