What is the best fish filter for a 45 gal fresh water tank? I've got two X-large 8-10 year old goldfish. I've had them since they were itty-bitty feeder fish.

I've been thinking about getting a new one because my fluval 304 just isn't cutting it. I like filters that don't have that waterfall filtering system, I've had ones like that and the sound drives me crazy!

Hi Emily-you have Impressive fish! Canisters are great, I have a similar sized tank & use 2 x Eheim 2026 canisters so why not simply add another canister to your tank?. Each of mine are rated up to 77 [UK] gallons so I'm way overcompensating & that's fine-you can never have too much filtration for Goldfish.

They are extremely quiet & trouble free. Forget the manufacturers recommendations regarding filter media & changing it constantly-there things run & run. One is filled with authentic Eheim ceramic media chips that it was supplied with, the other has regular nylon pan scrubbers [!] which have more surface area than just about anything else.

Each one gets the media gently rinsed in old tank water every 3 months to remove the loose debris & I stagger this so I do one clean every 6 weeks-the media lasts forever, all you need to change are the polyester polishing pads which disintegrate if you try to reuse them. Even allowing for this expense they cost next to nothing to run. Best purchase I ever made. These filters cost a lot initially but well worth it for your fish & an easy life for you!

Which kind of filter is up to you,but I think the most important factor is ease of maintenance. A filter, after all doesn't actually remove anything from the tank,it only collects the junk for you to remove. Therefore the best filter is one that's quick and easy to clean, that doesn't cost bunches of money for filter "elements". For "hang-on" filters I like the Aqua-clear or the Penguin Bio-wheel(with a reuse-able element, not the pre-loaded kind). There are probably other good ones, these are just the ones that I have the most experience with.

This is one that does have the "waterfall" system but if you keep your water level up it is silent which means you will know "hear" when you water level drops, but this is the best filter I have found the replacement media is very inexpensive here is the link: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3579+12320&pcatid=12320 I would get the 200 or the 350 extra filtartion dosn't hurt! Also this is a very common filter so you should not have any problems finding one at your local pet sotres!

Get ones that are easy on maintenance. Filters that hang on the back of tank are best when it comes to maintenance. I say get one that suites the size of your tank. Prefered brands are Fluval, Tetra and Ehiem.
