When a computer is running slower than it was when you first got it, then it's going to be a combination of not enough memory, viruses (or whatever you want to call them), and just plain ole too old to be running the newer software that's out now. Also if the internet is slow then your internet connection speed will be a factor (not much you can do about dialup). By fixing these you will start to see the speed increase.

I'd start with memory. If you're running XP or Vista, you'll need a minumum of 512MB. With Vista you really need more but 512 will help. If you're running any type of antivirus software then it will eat memory like I eat cake. So check the memory.

Second I'd get a good virus scanner and try to get rid of the viruses. That may be hard to do. If it's too bad you may have to wipe the system and reinstall windows. Make sure that whatever you do get a good internet security software installed afterwards to keep them critters off. Also you'll need to have a minimum of 512MB memory to run that internet security stuff.

Lastly you can go into msconfig (if you're running 2k you'll have to find a third party utility because 2k doesn't have msconfig) and turn off some of the startup items. That'll help a lot.

As for it being old, well the only way to fix that is another pc. But if you do all of the things mentioned above, you'll be able to get by.

Depends. You got money?

New computers are ridiculously cheap these days, $400US will buy a much faster computer than your 4 year old.

If that's too rich for your blood, your computer almost certainly does not have enough memory. A simple memory upgrade, probably under $100US, may get you by.

You have a bug. You either have a virus or spyware or both. Need to update your antivirus and get a spyware package like adaware or spybot. Good luck.

Install Spy ware and Virus programs on it, and have them scan it and clean the infection. :)
