My garage brand name is "Genie Excellerator" and I often find the garage door is up upon returning home,as if someone else had opened my door, even though I know I closed the door when I left the house.

undo the back of your remote, and pre set the #s

genies are junk! Make sure door is closing all the way. You CAN NOT change the frequency. Your door is set on a certain frequency, and your remote with it. You can change the code of the remote though. If it has dip switches like others indicated do what they said. But if it is newer there is a learn button on unit. On most genies it is on front of opener left hand side. It is typically a little black button with a red LED close by. Press and hold until light goes out. Then press and release button. Press your remote button twice. This reprograms remote and erases all codes.

BUT AGAIN GENIES ARE JUNK. Go with liftmaster or anything by the chamberlain group.

To address your question: We had the same problem for quite some time. We pushed the button and thought the garage door had gone down as we drove off. But it had not. The device that fits over head in the garage was not working properly and sometimes it closed, sometimes it didn't and sometimes he came down halfway and stopped. Had to replace the whole unit.

To the second part: Yes, someone else could have the same frequency. There are crooks who drive around testing out their remote controls to see if they can open garage doors because they KNOW there are same frequencies. Contact the company and ask them what to know. I wish I knew the answer it would save you the call and frustration but I don't. Good Luck.

This very well could be, in the old days before filters you could jingle your car keys going down the street and, open the garage doors as you went. They solved this with filters on the better models since then.
I suggest you call the company or the dealer you got it from and tell them what's going on.
