Firm involves determining a set of rules and enforcing them. Fair involves communicating the rules clearly and then enforcing them consistently. In my classes, I am firm and fair. All assignments have a deadline...all deadlines have an automatic 48 hour extension with no penalty. After the 48 hours, the late penalty is 100%. There are NO exceptions to the policy...I enforce it consistently for all students. While some might think this is "unfair", it is the most equitable and fair system possible...all students have the same opportunity to complete each assignment...and every student that doesn't take advantage of the opportunity, experiences the exact same result.

I totally disagree that it is "fair" to take other issues into account when deciding the rules...this is, by definition, unfair because one student gets an opportunity that others did not. The 48 hour extension is enough to take care of virtually any problem or emergency that might arise...students that know the rules and choose to put something else ahead of their studies do NOT deserve the same rewards at those that choose to put their studies first!

In relation to classroom management and discipline, you can be firm and fair at the same time. You treat all students fairly when enforcing the rules and you enforce the rules in a firm manner. For example, if you have a rule and a known consequence for breaking that rule, you impose the consequence no matter who breaks the rule.

Being firm is essentially sticking to guidelines, rules, and procedures that you have set forth and enforcing them across the board. Being fair comes into play when you have situations beyond anyones control; deaths, accidents, hospitilization, family or personal emergencies that have to be taken into consideration. One must evaluate these situations and determine the appropriate action(s) needed.
