Even Cowgirls get the Blue
Madame Bovary
Portnoy's Complaint
The Company of Women
Les Fluers du Mal

Good books are:

Audition Speeches for Young Actors - Jean Marlow

Also, the internet is a great resource!

Any actor who wants to get work should always have two monologues prepared: at least one "classic" (as in something from Shakespeare, Ibsen, O'Neill, Miller, etc.) and one "contemporary", meaning a more recent author like Neil Simon, August Wilson or Tony Kushner.

Finding a good monologue takes time. You need to look at everything; in libraries, in bookstores and definitely online. It's best to find something you feel comfortable with, yet something that can show off your range. And unless they specifically ask for it, NEVER do anything taken directly from the play you're auditioning for. Nine times out of ten, if the director likes what you did with your prepared monologue, they will ask you back to do a "cold" reading from the script, (meaning you'll be reading it for the very first time, sight unseen.)

Start with an excellent book called MILLENNIUM MONOLOGUES, edited by Gerald Lee Ratliff. Amazon.com and some bookstores carry it...

what is with these hs directors? never did a monologue in my day at tryouts, not even in college. maybe they want to know if you are interested enough in theatre to read some plays. your monologue should be a role that suits you
