The rust from the tools is likely to stain the dishwasher.

Recommended - use a wire scrub brush (dry) to clean off as much of the rust and dirt as possible. Wipe them down with WD-40 -- but it will attract crud if you don't dry them very thoroughly afterwards.

Rags with rust or WD-40 should be discarded, as they will cause problems in your washer/dryer if you try to wash them next.

No, unless you like rusty tools. Clean them off with solvent, oil or WD-40. Then treat them with WD-40 to prevent further rust. If cleaning doesn't remove the rust use a wire brush.

Ditto as above, you can but don't use a chlorinated dish washing powder.

* Chlorine will corrode your tools even further.

* Suggest rinsing them in neutral hand dishwashing liquid to remove grease. Then soak in a dilute Phosphoric acid (coke or Pepsi) solution to reduce the rust back to metal (Fe3+ to Fe2+).

Yes, but not if there is car grease on them, cause it will ruin the dishwasher. Try to rinse them or soak them first. I put stuff in the dishwasher all the time. Toys, loose change, my sun glasses. And im credible cause im a custodian.

i would use wd40 and a scotch brite pad to clean the rust and dirt off of them. if you have a lot of tools that you are trying to restore consider buying a scotch brite wheel for a drill or they even make them for bench grinders. i got one for my benchgrinder and it works great, i have cleaned up several pairs of pliers, hammers, and such. go easy with it though, don't rush it, let the tool do the work, so that it doesn't get away from you. plus you can use it to clean up car parts and other stuff, too. good luck, hope this helps.

Yes, wash them along with your Lenox china and Waterford crystal.

Sure you can as long as you make certain they are well dried. WD-40 leaves a residue that attracts dirt and dust.
