While Gerald Ford served America had some healing to do and I believe we are lucky we had a great individual like him. I also understand Ford wasn't on the top of Nixon's list but congress would approve no one else. The House Minority leader was appointed as Vice President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.

Ford presided over the period of greatest mutual understanding between parties.

By reconciling differenced between political groups, he averted a disastrous schism which would have devastated America.

Don't listen to anyone who says he wasn't a good President- he was an excellent President and was necessary.

I'm not saying he wasn't a good man, but Jeez, he certainly wasn't an effective president. He was a stop gap until the next election, which he lost.

In my opinion he only got to be president by promising to pardon Nixon after Nixon resigned and he was sworn in. That one action showed his cupidity for an office he never could have achieved in the normal way and lost him the confidence (if there ever was any) of the American people, who were disgusted by his action.

Even he stated that his pardon of Nixon cost him any chance of being elected president.

He had to become president. He did more as a citizen than as president.

He did, however, inspire some funny SNL sketches back in the 70's.
