Open Da Night, on St. Viateur (I think) near Esplanade has the best coffee. Hey and I guess there's no smoking there anymore--bonus! (Haven't been in a few years, I hope it's still around.)

Or what was the one on St-Denis? La Brulerie?

The ones mentioned by Goddess and Lotus are super, friendly and charming! I, personally, prefer a more bo-ho atmosphere and so I like Presse Cafe in the Village (on St. Catherine Street). There are some wonderful high-end cafes nearer McGill. I ate at a Portugese cafe there on my last trip and was delighted by the food and the atmosphere. Ah, how I love Montreal!

Try the downtown area in Montreal near the McGill Metro. The Brulerie has the best coffee and there is one downtown as well as on Saint Denis street. There is also Second Cup on Rue Mont-Royal. And its all no smoking.
