What would be the peak RPMs of a 50-year old Johnson 6-HP outboard engine?

5200 RPM

This is an interesting question, because different boat motors will turn more. If it is a mariner or merc 60-115 Your not supposed to turn them more than 5200, but It all depends. We race boats, and sometimes run stock motors. We have a stock merc 150, that will turn 7200. This motor has never came apart. If it is like a merc drag motor Ive seen them turn 8700. It just depends on the motor. Let us know what kind of motor your speaking of.

Not sure but if no one answers this you can find out anything about any boat or motor in these forums
I joined them a few years ago upon buying my first boat, and they have never let me down.
