The boiling point for Ethanol is 78.4 °C. You may have had a mis-calibrated thermometer or you may have had a higher or lower atmospheric pressure. If you want to check the exact boiling point based on these factors, check for a calculator here: http://www.partyman.se/calculator.html. The correct answer is 78 degrees (in Celcius)..You were not that far off, could have been a small error which is very easy to do because it is hard to get precise in measurements depending on the equipment...I had this problem in my organic chem class

Pure ethanol is ~78.3C.

I'll need to think about the second part.

Can you add a few details:
What were you using to measure the temperature?
How were you heating it?
What kind of container was it in?

What kind of thermometer were you using? What is a thermocouple (bimetalic)? Where exactly was the thermometer located?
