That word did exist,

There was a LOT of tension between the free states and the slave states while they were writing the Constitution. The drafters wanted to be as vague as possible while writing the document.

I think the word did exist but the writers of the Constitution probably just thought it was not a very polite word.

Because the POLITICIANS assembling the article avoided using a 'buzz' word, these were ancestors of Geo W Bush (and others) who covered up the horrific fact they were condemning untold millions to slavery and setting up the conditions for an all out Civil War.

The word slave is as old as the Bible or the Koran or any religious text you wish to cite or slight.

Because the persons being imported also included those who were serving a period of involuntary servitude where they could pay back for their ocean passage and room and board provided by the employer, by doing a fixed period of labor in place of that money. Both slavery and involuntary servitude were later banned by the 13th Amendment.

Article1 sec 9 is about taxation and levies of property. Slavery wasn't illegal then slaves were considered property.
