Now i know everybody has there opinions on this subject, but i found some facts about SSI. We are about 40 trillion in debt with SSI don't believe me google "SSI debt." Now as for free health care i think thats a great idea i do. It would be wonderful to have free health care but do you really want the gov't running it? Have you been to the Dept of Motor vehicles lately? Or heard how the gov't runs Amtrak? They derial every other week pretty much so why would we want to put our children even further into debt?.

A U.S. social health care probably would be a disaster. I think a better way to stop the declining quality of health care, and sky rocketing cost, is to consider expanding consumer protection laws to health care. Currently their is no cap on what hopsitals, pharmeceutical companies, and health care companies want to charge.

I keep hearing this argument, that somehow we are so dumb that we don't run anything well in the US. In fact I heard it at the Republican debate this week, they want my vote, but at the same time they are telling me they are useless.
Whats being discussed on the Democratic side is subsidies in order to afford health care coverage, money still goes to the insurance companies, the government gets stuck with covering, as it does now, the poor and the ones the insurance companies will not cover, like the ill and elderly.
We used to be a country that could do things, for this we were envied. Now it seems our present leaders think they can't run things well, and yes, years of Republican rule has pretty much shown us that cronyism and a general disregard for the public doesn't work. For that reason, even if no other I'd vote for the Democrats, not that they have all the answers, or even some of the answers, but because at least they are willing to work on the problems instead of telling me they are the problem.
If every other industrialized country in the world can find a way to keep their citizens healthy and out of bankruptcy court, surely ours can.

The reason Social Security & Social Security Insurance are so deep in debt is because the congress couldn't keep their hands off the surplus of all the years gone by. They, republican & democratic controlled congress, continually spend the surpluses that were accumulated for the many "pork" projects that their constituents wanted. All the while we were getting our meaningless little perks for our communities we were actually stealing our own old age protection. Old age, you know, we all face it, even those that think life for them will never change!!

Does the article also say that each month the checks are sent out and the balance collected is put into the general fund instead of being left in the SS fund? Actually, if the government would stop stealing the money, it would be in good shape. Greenspan said that Medicare is the one that is in trouble, not SS.

we could create an opportunity where everyone is required to have some form of insurance (so that we are not all left uninsured)....and it can still be to a large extent private. the government doesn't have to run it. one good book on this (that i am looking forward to reading myself) is the universal healthcare fix. bottom line: there are a lot of options on how this is done.

What you are saying is right. It is just that if the Government does not set up a guaranteed minimum healthcare system it will not happen. There is no other way.
