It's first recorded usage dates back to 1949 in a series of books called the Sexus by Henry Valentine Miller. From there, it gained use in literature. I do not know why it was used in this connotation.

Over the years of hearing people avoid the use of the word 'breast' I've come to the conclusion it's because of discomfort. There are other words that affect people this way. They are often considered to be 'dirty' or 'rude' words because they're about that other taboo word 'sex'. Silly really because these are things that everyone has, and does.

"Breast" sounds clinical. It's a term you'd use in a doctor's office. "Boob" is much more laid back. You'd use it with your beer-drinking buddies.
