I was at the record store looking at some Zappa albums, trying to find Joe's Garage. It wasn't there, and I had no clue how good the othe albums were, so:

What album(s) do you think have shining guitar parts?

What about his best album(s) overall?

megalomaniac: Well, yeah, I know that, but when a guy has so many albums and is so profilic, he has to have a bad album or an album that isn't as good as another. Plus, I don't want every single album.

He was so prolific and so skilled with the guitar that there are many albums that would fit that description but if you specifically want his guitar work I would recommend the 'Shut up and Play yer Guitar' series - fantastic!! (there's actually three of them and they're all good but the first one is the best)

As far as other great albums, I like: You are What you Is, One Size Fits All and Them or Us.

Boy, you were a little quick on the trigger but no worries, I give my answers piecemeal sometimes. Some of his albums are what you might say 'inaccessible' but he was undoubtably a musical genius and they all have something to recommend them.

I've got about 20 of his albums and I like them all and I'm only scratching the surface.

I always really enjoyed his soloing on 50/50 off the 'Overnight Sensation' album. This song also features the great jazz fusion artist 'Jean Luc Ponty' ripping a wild violin solo. He and Frank have a dual. Great stuff indeed!
There are just way too many great solos to mention here, but 'Black Napkins' off the 'Zoot Allures' album is sure to impress as well!
I've always enjoyed everything by Frank, but a good introduction to his music would be these albums;
Over-nite Sensation
Apostrophe (')
One Size Fits All
Zoot Allures
Bongo Fury
The above were his most popular and easily accessible to the new listeners ears. Frank released so many albums, and every few years his style really seemed to changed, along with his musicians and band line ups. He never wanted to sound stale.
After you've delved into the above, check these two out, they're great live rock albums, and funny as he**!
Fillmore East - June 1971
Just Another Band From L.A.
Then try these;
Chunga's Revenge
Roxy & Elsewhere (also a live album)
Sheik Yerbouti
Joe's Garage
Shut Up n' Play Yer Guitar

His earlier stuff from 1966-69 was very psychedelic, but very innovative, with great writing, musicianship, along with his wry sense humor thrown in. Some of the better albums from this period would include;
Freak Out!
Absolutely Free
We're Only in It for the Money
Uncle Meat
Hot Rats

Some of his 80's material was quite good too, but much different from what most consider his most creative period during the early 70's - late 70's.
