I prefer ones I've knit for myself because they fit better. If my feet were shaped to fit commercial socks, I wouldn't need to make the effort. :-)
I do prefer commercial socks to hand-knit socks with Western heels. Western heels just don't fit me nicely unless I'm wearing them with high-heeled shoes ... nope, not my style. Me, I do short-rowed or afterthought heels, "Eastern" rather than western European style.

Hand knitted, they are not so tight,much warmer in cold weather and even in hot weather if made with pure wool they are much cooler as they soak up moisture

both! store bought is great cause they have cute designs but my gram knitts socks and they are wayy comfy!

In my Tevas or in peoples houses where you know they will ask you to take your shoes off - handmade. But they don't fit in any of my other shoes.
