Why does adding 6M NaOH to the red solution tend to make it turn back yellow?

Methyl orange is an organic dye. In neutral or basic solution it is yellow. If the solution becomes acid, the dye picks up some H+ and becomes a organic salt of chlorine. In this form, it becomes red. The NaOH causes the compound to revert back to the original form.

Methyl Orange is an indicator... Hydrochloric Acid is acidic so it s turns red. Adding Sodium Hydroxide neutralises the solution as it is a base. Therefore it turns back to its original colour
