An armor piercing bomb went through the deck into one of the forward ammo magazines, exploding a million and a half pounds of gun powder that was stored there, thus sinking the ship. A bomb down the smoke stack would have only blown up an engine and not caused the huge explosion.
Deck armor thickness was usually sacrificed back then to gain better top speed on some battleships that were only meant to engage other surface ships and was a definite weakness that could be exploited by dive bombers.

In all probability, it was just a lucky hit by the Japanese. My father's adopted brother died on the Arizona, so it really doesn't matter why it sank, just that it did so. Thanks for asking. Good luck!

Didn't you know? It was a George W. Bush conspiracy. The Japanese didn't really sink the Arizona, but rather the CIA under the direction of George W. Bush in order to steal Japan's oil.
