if you're referring to the 'space time' continuum that a lot of sci fi etc authors write about it's because of the relationship between the speed of light in physical space and its effect on time-the relationship between the 3rd (spatial) and 4th (time) dimensions is one continually argued about: many people believe that by exceeding the speed of light in a vacuum, you would end up going back in time, simply because you would be seeing things that happened a certain amount of time AGO (depending on your speed exactly)

Space actually has 4 dimensions, one of which is time. You cannot separate space and time. If there is no time, there will be no space because TIME and SPACE are THE SAME THING, like energy and mass or electricity and magnetism. (Incidentally, some scientists think there are up to 7 extra dimensions, which are also linked to time. It's called M-theory or string theory or the Theory of Everything.)
Note: There are at least 5 different S. Theories.
P.S. All of them would probably make your head implode.

Space is defined as a place where there is matter, where there is matter there is movement, where there is movement there is time, they are inseparable. time can be dilated, slowed, for an object that moves at near light speed, this is because the mass of the moving object approaches infinity, it becomes so dense that movement, within the object, is also slowed. A black hole is so dense that that neither time nor space exists within the event horizon.

the universe is made up of 4 dimensions, the 3 dimensions of spae and the fourth dimension is time....these forms the space-time continum (sic?)...check out the book 'A Brief History of Time' by Stephen W Hawkings for more info on this...the book is for the layman and explains the concepts rather beautifully.

It's all tied up together in some mysterious, complex way. We are just now coming to be able to ask and perhaps answer some of your type questions. The true nature of the universe will be strange and bizarre and quite possibly... designed and created by some ultra advanced intelligence that is waiting for us to get smart enough to meet it.

because Einstein said that space and time weren't 2 separate things, they were 1 thing called the space-time continuum.

according to quantum mechanics, time and distance (space) are inversely related by speed. The closer to the speed of light an object travels, time becomes slower relative to the object (ie the object experiences time slower than other objects).

Actually, just like mass and energy, they are simply different forms of the same thing.
