lm thinking off getting a xbox 360 l was gearing it overheats
so does it come with a fan or do u need to buy one?

Ya thats the biggest problem with 360, it does overheat and then it results on "The ring of Death" and then you have to send it in to MS. They give you a 3 year warranty, but still you have to wait up to a month to get your system back. They are introducing cooler running CPU's and GPU's to see if that helps but those are expected to be released in early 08. I would suggest going on to xbox.com forums and reading up all you can there to get the latest info. Heres a good post

it overheats after 4 hours of continuous play or 5 hours of hd dvd viewing

I think there was a recall on the first models out, but the problem has long ago been fixed and the new models are just fine.
I should add- we got ours almost 2 years ago, almost no issues with it.

it overheats so mcuh it breaks sometimes and comes with a small fan but it doesnt do much
