are there any alto parts that are a moderate size (not a lead, but big enough not to be part of chorus) and don't require lots of dance?
Our school has an annual musical after winter break, and this year I want to have a part. I would go for someone like Rose or Kim, but our music teacher is so biased that we've known who the leads would be since last year. If it helps at all, I'm looking for something that would be like an equivalent of the god Agwe or a storyteller in the musical Once On This Island.

There are a couple of roles you might be interested in:

Mrs. Peterson (Albert's mother) is a major comic role. She's an older woman who hates her sons girlfriend and gets a lot of good lines. She never sings by herself in the show.

Mrs. MacAfee (Kim's mother) is another support role. She has some solo singing and a couple of scenes.

Ursula is a teen-aged demented Conrad Birdie fan. She sings some solo lines and has some funny dialogue moments.

I hope this helps you out, but don't count yourself out for trying for a leading role. You say your teacher is biased, but there's no harm in trying for a role you might not get, because you never know if the teacher will change her mind!

I dont recall Birdie being a dance show. I think the only parts would either be one of the neighbor mothers or one of the teens in the chorus.
