Jonathon D is correct. Some telephone companies will provide DSL service without requiring you to subscribe to a landline. Unfortunately, most telephone companies are not interested in serving their customers -- they're interested in making $$$. Since cell phones, VOIP, etc. are eliminating their need for existence, many telephone companies will require that you subscribe to a landline just to generate revenue.

No. Since DSL is through the phone company (not the cable company) you must have basic phone service to have DSL. Check with your phone company to ensure you have the least expensive options for your local phone service..

No, you must have a home line in order to have dsl service; unless, you decide to go wireless. Or you may want to contact your local cable company and see what options they can offer, but I still believe you must have a home line.

Depends on how crappy (greedy) your local phone company is. I'm using Qwest and they allow me to use DSL without subscribing to their landline telephone service.
