Planted cukes and eggplants for the first time this year. They look great but are very bitter. Is there something I should add to the soil?

the cukes could be bitter for a couple reasons. Not enough water or too much water and they could just be the type you planted. Eggplant tends to be on the bitter side to begin with, so soaking it in lightly salted water for about 30 minutes before you cook it is always a good idea.

They are over ripe. I've heard this some where and have tried it myself; seems to work but don't know how.....cut the end tip off of the cuke and rub the two open ends together in a circular motion. This is supposed to 'pull' the bitterness out.

They both get bitter as they mature. Younger fruits are less bitter, older ones more so. It is nearing the end of the season so most of yours are probably getting to be quite mature.

They are bitter because life has treated them unfairly and they feel like they have missed out.

I suggest some therapy for them.
