Oooh avoid dead on matching colors! All good Southern girls in the 1970s and the 1980s were brought up to do that but it can look very DTM (dyed to match as in those horrible satin shoes bridesmaids get dyed to match their dresses!) Ashley Judd is an actress that does this alot - bright purple dress, bright purple eyeshadow - yuk!
Best best to just to stick with warms and cools. If you are wearing cool colored clothes like grays, blues, or black you can wear eyeshadow that is more grey, silver, blue or purple hues (considering those colors work with you eye and skin tone, of course).
If you are wearing warm colored clothing reds, oranges, warm neutrals, then I'd stick to neutral brown colored shadows (this doesn't have to be boring however, as bronze and sparkly warms metallics fit into that range)
If you really want to wear fun eye shodowcolors such as bright acid green or magenta for a pop of color on your eyes, I'd wear black clothing- at least on top. You don't want you eyemakeup competing with your clothes.

i never match my make-up to my clothing. I wear what is appropriate for my skin tone and hair color. The only amount of matching that I do is like if I am wearing say brown, I would not wear grey or other cool tone colors.

i think it is kind of tacky to wear make-up that is all matchy matchy with clothing.

I never match make-up with my clothes, I don't even match my make-up. First, it has to match your skin. There is a simple way too make it look not matchy, but still match. An example is if you are wearing white and black, I'd wear a very clear lip balm, a black eye pencil, and reddish/pink eyeshadow, but lightly. This is how that all matches:
Clear goes with white, since they will blend
Black goes with white
Red goes with black

They all connect in some way to your clothing without matching, odd, isn't it?

You never ever ever, as a rule of thumb, try matching your makeup to an outfit. Now, if you are wearing earth tones one day you can wear earth tone makeup. But, I wouldn't wear green eye shadow to match a green top or purple to go with a purple sweater. That is a little drastic. The important idea about makeup is to find colors that suite you and bring out your eye color and best facial features. If you are questioning all the possibilities go to your local mall. Most makeup stores offer makeovers and can help you match colors to go with your eyes and lips. Good luck!

I only ever change the colour of my eyeshadow...and i only make it match with a dress in formal events.

Otherwise i always have the same bronzed look with neutral lips and loads of mascara/eyeliner. I also use blush for dressy but casual outfits.

Normally, I just go for simply eyeliner, cover-up, maybe mascara, and clear-ish gloss.

But if you wear eyeshadow, it depends completely on your style.

You might want to try those complimentary colours. (i.e purple and yellow, green and red, orange and blue)

Or what you could also do is pick out (at most 2, not including earth tones) colours, and have them somehow blend (not match exactly, though) your other colours.

I don't match my makeup to my clothes at all, I stray as far away from it as possible. Which is hard cause I wear so many colors at a time.

I don't usually match the two, just wear make-up that looks natural and you won't have to worry about it matching your clothes.
