about the only thing youcan do is pull a valve cover off and make sure there is no sludge buildup inside it, other than that you can't tell until you get it running.

You might be able to tell the motor is bad, but you can't tell if it's any good just by looking at it. Get a written guarantee if you buy it.

Pull the plugs - should all look the same, compare with a chart like this one:

If the plugs are all brand new, with no evidence of engine running, do NOT buy.

Pull one of the valve covers - look for excessive gunk build up.

Look in ports on heads if no intake or exhaust manifolds - should not be rusted or oily.

Check dipstick for water and/or gasoline - either is bad.

No. The only way to tell is to start it up and listen to it, check the fluids, look for smoke & oil leaks, etc. Just looking at it doesn't help at all. He can make it look great just by cleaning it and giving it a nw coat of paint (less than $20 at Auto Zone.)

It might be good, and it might not. Yolu have no way of knowing. How much are you willing to pay for an unknown?

Good luck!

Pretty hard to tell, but like others said, at least pull off a valve cover. Also the water pump inlet should not be rust color. That indicates neglect. Look at the oil dipstick. If it has a brown or black stain on it, RUN.

Check the casting # to see if it's what he says it is.

you cant.......looking in the valve cover,s or checking the plug color won,t reveal a spun bearing or cracked block.....if he,s willing to give you a written guarantee that,s been notarized...then you can try it but that won,t guarantee you,ll be able to find him if it,s bad.........tell him you,ll pay for it after installation.
