it depends on the size and importance of the "thing"... A very important. thing(wedding ring) ..don't run any h2o and shut down water supply and take apart the drain ...it should still be at the "u" part , if it is past there...I think that it is gone :(

Give us a clue what the "thing" is! If it's a metal thing (ferrous) you may be able to use a mechanics magnet (thin, long, with a handle) If it's not magnetic, hemostats might work. All that depends on how far down the drain the "thing" is. For real though it's not hard to take apart the drain and put it back together again. If you didn't flush it down further with water it should be in the trap Just unscrew the union.

dependin on wat it is if the water was running then not sure but if it fell with out water than just go under the sink and turn the two knobs off and with a wrench (adjustable one) or u can use your hand if its not too tight , undo the pipe. its only one section
picture this.
wen u look under your sink u will see a white pbc pipe thats wat it is called i think. and u will a loop there wit a ring on top and at the bottom of it. u just turn those rings. the are used to keep that pipe section in place.do it carefully cuz if watever u dropped down the sink if it might be resting on that part where as if u had water it would most definately keep goin. if u dont see it there then it might be at the next angled section in which u might not be able to reach but then again u might but its most likely resting at that point or at the next.
or just take the drain plug thing out. u will see its connection under the sink as well and use a flash light and look in da whole and see if u see it then u will kno for sure and if u do see it then just go get a nice long stick or somethin and at the tip u can put somethin real sticking like double sided tape or somethinand stick it down on it and pull it up slowly and hope it stays on.
or spend da money on a plumber.

Try sticking a big piece of bubble gum to a thin dowel rod and probing the drain for whatever you dropped. If you can't find it in the straight part of the drain pipe, you'll have to take the trap and elbow joint apart to get at the missing item.
By the way, I think that was an episode of "I Love Lucy"!! :-)

Unscrew the elbow pipe, you should be able to recover it rather quickly.
Good Luck,

the "p" trap will catch it if you haven't run any more water after it dropped, it will unscrew by hand
