Short version: Oedipus became a great king and he had many great leadership qualities. The tragedy was that, since his parents left him in the forest near a mountain to die, he did not know who they were and he ended up killing his father and then marrying his mother. His tragic flaw was that he basically felt inferior because he had a clubfoot (which is why his parents abandoned him) and he tried to overcompensate for it. But he could not manage his feelings about his past when he finally discovered it and it led to his own undoing. Contrary to some people's belief, his tragic flaw was not that he had an Oedipal Complex, a term coined by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century.

I don't see him as a tragic hero. He blinded himself so he would not have to see his misdeeds. How is blinding yourself so that you do not have to see the chaos you brought honorable. My English professor did not like my argument, but I have always seen him as a weak character.
