its difficult to estacblish what you have and haven't tried however this is a standard method of connection.

in internet explorer go to:

Tools | internet options | Connections | Then Click Add. Enter the dial-up number you Service provider will supply this.

If you have further problems then you need to check your modem... if it is internal you probably have no link lights.. if external check your manual for troubleshooting from the lights. Go to Device manager press windows key + break | Hardware | device manager.

Look at modems is there any warning marks over it? You may be able to pick solve it by updating the driver from the manufacturers website. You can check out what you have by right-clicking the modem and selectign properties.

I had this difficulty it gradual in the past. i'm working WinXp. i take advantage of modem too , dial up connection. i do no longer understand why it became appearing like that. i attempted each and every thing , from AntiVirus structures to Registry Cleaners and AntiSpyware. no longer something worked. in basic terms answer : format your pc.you're able to try this via putting the OS cd and selecting Reinstall domicile windows or something like that. warning : save all your documents on cd earlier reformating pc. All documents would be deleted. good success. BTW BitDefender sucks. Nod32 and Symantec rock.

your friend is thick as sh.it. you never need a dial-up connection if broadband works!!!!!! it's probably a file-sharing program that needs a port opening on your router/firewall. it is also highly unlikely that you need a new OS for any programme of this kind. do yourself a favour, get some friends who know what they are actually talking about and look after your best interests instead of ploughing through their encyclopedia of cr.ap then deciding you need an OS - sounds like a real pro...

Sounds like you might be on a Mac? I found that by turning off your modem ( if it's an external ) and turning it on before starting the Mac works.
Why? I don't know.
