Even if I use more zeros, so that 6 9/16 equals 6.5625 and then convert, I end up with, 6 45/8. Can this just not be done so that it will convert back out as 6 9/16 or I am just doing something wrong? Thanks.

This can be done.

As a decimal, 6 9/16 = 6.5625

I'm not sure how you're converting the decimal back to a fraction but all we need to do is simplify the fraction 5,625 / 10,000.

If you divide both the numerator and denominator by 625 you'll end up with 9/16.

Thus 6.5625 = 6 9/16.

( I think your mistake was thinking .5625 = 5,625 / 1,000 )

you do need to use all 4 decimal positions

I think that your problem the second time was the 45/8, which should have been 4.5/8 which is equal to 9/16

You must be doing something wrong because .5625 converts back exactly to 9/16.
