Not only should you adapt to their culture, you should also respect the country that YOU opt to move to enough to learn about that country's history.
Respect those people who allow you the right to become a friend and a neighbor. Don't expect them to change their entire way of living to adapt to you. You're an outsider.

I feel that the people that choose to move to any country other than their own should adopt and adapt to the culture of the country in which they are living. But only to a degree. I feel they should learn to speak the native language, learn what the socially accepted mediums are and abide by those. I do feel, however, that it is acceptable for someone to keep their own values and the parts of their culture that are important to them. America has been a "melting pot" for a very long time, and we wouldn't have the culture that we do, had we not embraced other points of view from around the world. America would not be the nation that it is, without the immigrants with their various religions and cultures that have shaped it.

Please enlighten us as to what - specifically - is "our culture?"
American has ALWAYS been a "melting pot," and unless your name is Pocahontas, sit down and be quiet.
"Our language?" What exactly does that mean?
Oh, you mean English, I assume?
Never mind that the native tribes who lived here before the Pilgrims and the Spanish spoke several different dialects.
"Our customs?" What is that?
Hon, I was born in 1949 and the home town I remember was a glorious combination of Germans, Hispanics, Italians, Swedish, and Polish, among others. We all lived together and got along just fine. We enjoyed each other's ethnicities and customs.
Would you like to tell us just exactly what a model "American" is to you?
You know, the original settlers were rather simple people; I don't think your teased hair and eye makeup would sit very well with the women back then. Besides, they were too busy tending crops and weaving cloth. Done any of that lately?
Write this down: America is a country of change, and it's not going to STOP changing just to make your little world comfortable.
Europeans, who live in countries smaller than the state of Wisconsin, often speak 2-3 languages.
How many do you speak/read?
Ya, "press 1 for English"...if you think you can pass a college SAT test.

Sounds exactly like what the British loyalist during the time that our Constitution was drafted felt.
If you don't like the freedom for all to choose, please go where they have none. You might be much more happy in Cuba.
Obviously you have no clue, what makes the "Great Melting Pot" the best country on this planet. The main thing that makes America so great, is the mixture of cultures, that IS America.

Thank You!! I totally agree. When I lived in Germany, I had to adapt to German culture, same think when I visited other countries in Europe. Our national language was almost German and our national bird would have been a turkey, but funny how things worked out. I should move to Mexico and piss cry and moan until they start converting their official language to English. I'll admit, my ancestors are immagrants....but they learned English. Our society is so twisted by all these civil rights and human rights activists that I can't even look at anyone without being accused of racial profiling. Learn the language, learn the culture or don't waste your time moving here.

When in Rome do as the Romans do. In the US you want to live here, you pay the taxes like I do and you darned well shouldn't come here and expect me to cowtow to you and change my language customs, etc. If that's what you want, go home. Most of the middle eastern countries hate our way of life, our beliefs, etc. so, they came here on 9/11 to show their disapproval. and now they have the unmitigated gall to want me to convert to Islam. Stay in your country,do your thing over there and leave me and my family alone here.I don't like their way of life but I didn't go over there. As far as I'm concerned they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine and rotate'

Although I suspect you were born in the United States, I nevertheless would venture a guess that you CHOOSE to live here. That being the case, why don't YOU learn to express yourself in OUR language correctly? Your English sucks -- no offense. Your "question" is replete with grammatical and stylistic errors. In fact, the very first sentence of your post contains such a horrendous grammatical error, that it alone would be enough to put you on a boat back to wherever your ancestors came from, if we were to apply your philosophy to YOU. Or are you one of those people who believe that "real" Americans do not need to speak proper English?
Besides, how do you define "American culture"? Harvard or trailer parks? Dawn Upshaw or Britney Spears? Does adopting to YOUR culture entail living in a trailer, eating pork rinds, and missing half of one's teeth? Or being familiar with the US Constitution -- which, sadly, many anti-immigrant zealots are not? Does eating a plate of *authentic* Italian pasta constitute a failure to adapt to "American culture"? Or failure to speak correct English? In fact, should immigrants speak the mangled version of English that you exhibit here as part of adopting to your culture? I mean, if they speak correct English unlike you -- wouldn't that make them different from you, a "real" American?
