Termination is not covered in the by-laws. Can a governing board just vote to get rid of a member of a non profit organization without cause and if not what is there liability in regard to suit?

First, vote to amend your bylaws.
Then, vote the member out.

It's impossible to say without knowing the nature of the organization, the relevant statutes of the state where it is located, and precisely what the bylaws do cover.

Someone needs to sit down with a lawyer and explain what the organization is, show him the documents that do exist, explain just why it is that someone wants the member ousted, and let the lawyer research the state law and tell you something solid.

No one is going to be able to give you anything more useful than "consult a lawyer" here.

* Amending the bylaws may or may not work. If you want them out because of race or gender or some other "protected" status, they can sue and a judge will be happy to "fix" your bylaws for you.
