My parents used to leave the keys in their car in the driveway, too and thought nothing of it. I wonder what made this world become the unsafe place it is today?

Sara & Bryan W - We sometimes do that, too since a family we know was murdered right in their own home while. This family lived in a supposed wealthy and safe residental neighborhood.

when i was a kid my mom never locked the doors to our house. she didn't even have a house key, because it was lost from lack of use!

there are just more people now, so there is a greater chance of something bad happening.

i agree that it is very sad.
bright blessings.

It depends on where you live. If you're from a safer area, then yeah it'd be ok. But if you live in a high-crime area, no... don't. Even if they wouldn't hurt/kill you, someone could use the open window as a path to get into your house a steal. My windows in my room have screens, so no one could get in unless they cut them and I'd probably hear that noise and wake up. Also, my room is on the upstairs level, so they'd also have to have a ladder and climb up to even attempt to get in. I usually use a fan to keep cool. I'm afraid it'll start raining while my windows are open at night (we have quite unpredictable weather where I am lol). When I stayed the night with my best friend, we had both bedroom windows open because it was really hot in the house. I wasn't bothered by it because 1. The area is pretty safe and 2. My best friend is a guy - if something DID happen, he'd protect me! In your case, I wouldn't leave it open ALL the way... just a little bit where air is coming in.

I do believe that things aren't so much different now - people are just less trusting. I think TV News helped create the onset of nationwide fear, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Being concerned and careful enough to lock your doors is one thing, but cowering in fear all of the time is quite another. People didn't lock their doors because they were unaware of what went on 'out there' for the longest time. Just because there were no statistics and people didn't hear about murder every night doesn't mean it didn't exist. Media has brought these things to our front door whereas before all we knew was our own little microcosms. Country or city, I wouldn't leave the door to my house unlocked, nor would I leave the keys in the car. I know it's sad, but there are dangerous people out there and there always have been. Being in a country may make one more trusting overall but it doesn't mean you're invulnerable, and it never did.

Sorry I sound like such a spoilsport. ;-P I honestly cannot believe that there was less crime then than there is now - just less mention of it.

Whgere I live it is STILL extremely Rural and NO one locks their doors at all, EVER. Folks leave for weeks at a time and doors are wide open and vehicle keys are still in the vehicles.
Out here, it's sometimes a amtter of life and death to find an unlocked door in the middle of the winter. It's understood that doors will be unlocked and refrigerators are available for rummaging throuhg, If anything is taken SOME form of payment is left behind. That's just the way it IS in the North Country Rural areas.

I moved to the rural area that I live in back in 1979 and back then we never worried about locking cars, locking screen doors, until there was a murder in our town. Everything changed then. Everyone since then has been scared to leave a door open or go out alone. Yes, those were the days.

There are still places you can do that, we leave both vehicles in the driveway with keys and my purse in there too. We do live in the country and not near any large cities so that makes me feel safer than being in a city or close to a big city. My parents live out in the country too and leave their doors unlocked, only time they were locked was one time my dad locked me out cause I went out late lol...had to sleep in my car.

Well, that is one advantage of having 5 protective dogs. I mean, they would have to trip all over huge dogs in order to get in my door! lol
I leave my doors unlocked, but usually take out my car keys.
However, when I was a kid, my brother and I would go on long walks or bike rides out in the country. I wouldn't feel safe allowing small kids to do that now...sigh

No, I'm just glad it is locked--when I am at home. In fact a nut did try to get in and in fact was demanding entry. The cops said he did it all the time.

I'm sorry I haven't been around that long. I always make sure my cars are locked and my house is locked at all times.
