1 1/2 + 3/8 = 1 7/8
because
1 1/2 = 1 4/8
if you reduce 4/8 it is one half
to find this you have to make the denomenators of the 2 numbers by multiplying the 2 in 1/2 by 4. the denomenator is the bottom number in the fraction. but whatever you do to the denomenator must be done to the numerator. the numerator in 1/2 is one so you multiply 1 times 4 which is 4. then you put them together. 4/8

you end up with 1 4/8 + 3/8 = ?
4/8 + 3/8 = 7/8
add the whole #'s
1 + 0 = 1
put it together
1 + 7/8 = 1 7/8
