I recently switched from desktop to laptop. I download Audiobooks on CD that I borrow from my local library BUT have found that the security stickers the library puts on the CDs to prevent thefts make the CD too big for the wafer thin space my laptop allows in it's CDrom drive. The drive won't recognize the CD as a CD and so I'm unable to download it at best and at worst it freezes up my computer.
I've seen external DVD writing drives but are there external CDrom reading drives that I could use to rip CDs to my laptop and then transfer to my MP3 player?

Do the DVD writer drives double as CDrom reading drives?

A DVD writer does everything; read and write on CDs and DVDs.

DVD EXTERNAL DRIVE WILL RIP YR CDS TOO -
dvd is newer technology and is backward compatible to cd which means it can read/write cds - you need to have writable or rewritable cd of course and burning software which usually comes together with external dvd or cd drive
cds came first and dvds are much denser (can hold more data on same area) than cd so external cdrom CAN NOT read dvds although dvd players can as said above - so buy external dvd drive - you'll be able to read and write both cds and dvds with them
yes you can rip cd from external dvd drive and then transfer to yr mp3 player - no problem

Yes they are. All you will need is an open usb port.
