As torbaynewfs said, there are probably as many types of veterinarians in practice as there are doctors in the human medical field. Just to name a few more- emergency medicine & critical care, internal medicine specialists, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, zoo medicine, species-specific specialisations... Then there's the 'paraclinical' areas- radiology, ultrasonography, pathology, clinical pathology, etc.

Vets also go into a lot of other areas. A veterinary degree can see you working in medical/veterinary research, for pharmaceutical and pet food companies, as agricultural consultants, for the government (e.g quarantine and inspection), in laboratories, teaching in universities, etc.

Personally, I like practices that are a mixture of companion animal and large animal practice (though I can't do large animals because of a disability) as it gives so much variety. Neither is 'better'- it all depends on the individual vet. Large animal practice is much harder physically. Rural practices have out of hours calls to deal with, whereas a lot of the city practices have emergency centres that they can refer to. I could go on forever!

A vet tech is NOT a type of vet.
Vets can have any number of specialities. There are cardiologists, endocrinologists, opthomologists.....they have most of the same kids of specialities that human medicine does.
There is large animal practices, companion animal practice, research animal medicine, university practice, zoo medicine.
Vets can work in a lot of different settings. The USDA employes vets.
Just do a little research and you will find a lot of different venues that vets are in and different specialities that they have taken.
