The pap smear is done to check to see if something looks suspicious for cancer or pre-cancer. If they find something then the colposcopy is done to do further evaluation to see if the spots have turned in to pre-cancer or what they call in situ (the step before actual cancer) or actual cancer cells.

Then when the results come back he will make a determination of what the next steps are to help take care of the situation.

First of all, it's a shame that your gyn didn't explain this to you more thoroughly. I recommend that you find another gyn. I've been a nurse in gyn for two years, so I know the ins and outs of colpos and it's not right for them to leave you confused about any procedure that you have. Never be afraid to ask questions, no matter how stupid the question might seem to you. There really is no stupid question when it comes to your health, and your gyn should never make you think there is.
First of all, your pap smear probably came back with abnormal cells and positive for HPV. HPV is Human Papilloma Virus and is considered an STD. Certain strains can cause warts. There are over 100 strains of HPV and it is very common. If you or your partner or any of your partner's partners have had more than three sexual partners in your lifetime, it is quite likely that you carry HPV. The only way that most people even know that they have it is if they get warts, or if it shows up on a woman's Pap smear. Most men never even know that they have it. The more aggressive strains have been shown to cause cervical cancer and this is why it is strongly recommended that women get a pap smear done yearly.
When the gyn performs a colposcopy, they are looking at your cervix under 15 times magnification. Usually they will take pictures of your cervix, spray it with a solution that makes the abnormal areas show up better and then take biopsies. The biopsies will be sent to the lab to see how much the virus has changed your cervix. If it comes back Low Grade, it depends on the gyn as to how it will be treated, if at all. Some gyns will just have you come back every six months for a pap followed by another colpo if the pap comes back abnormal. HPV is a little like chicken pox, in that your body usually sheds the disease within about two years and is immune to that particular strain after that. Some gyns will want to treat them in various ways. They can freeze the abnormal spots and kill that particular layer of tissue until it sloughs off and new and (hopefully) healthy tissue regrows. They can do what is called a LEEP, which is where they go in and slice off a thin layer of the cervix to cut out the abnormal areas.

Essentially a biopsy is anytime something, usually a small something, is surgically cut out of the body and then examined, often visually.

Stress and worry can have just as much negative impact on the body as more physical pathologies, so I'd suggest you take your mind off it, eat alot of fresh vegetables, excercise every day, and do thing's you enjoy doing, whether thats getting outdoors, cooking a meal with family, or whatever floats your boat that doesnt involved eating alot of proccessed foods.

Stay cool, keep breathing, and get the results when they come. If this was actually something that could kill you and something worth worrying about, your doctor wouldnt be waiting around 30 days for test results.
