Your clothes are smelling musty because there is mold in your washing machine. You will need to use vinegar to prevent this. If you don't want your clothes smelling like vinegar, you are going to have to use some kind of fabric softener or dryer sheet.
You may want to look into getting a new washer. My mom had this problem with the last washing machine she bought.

after the vinegar wash to remove any smell...start washing smaller loads, use a good fabric softener, then move them immediately from the washer to the dryer, and use a dryer sheet. make sure they are completely dry, and remove them immediately from the dryer to fold them or hang them up. Allowing clothes to sit in the washer any length of time after the cycle is complete, or leaving them in the dryer when they are not completely dry are what causes that smell...this generally happens when the load is too big to completely dry.

Sometimes it's better to use too much liquid detergent than not enough. How many capfuls of detergent are you putting in? Maybe try doubling or even tripling up on that and try some of those fabric softeners in the dryer...Better yet, use GAIN laundry detergent...it smells soooo good...you won't even need to wear any perfume or cologne! (The commercials are true!).

Use only good name brand detergent...nothing genaric.
Use a scoop of oxy clean.
Use 1/4 cup bleach.
Dry with snuggle fabric softener.
There is no way your clothing will smell musty after all that!

You need to wash them again. This time add some vinegar and or a cup of Borax. This is a great helper. Musky smelling things are not clean. Good luck.

Good for you on cutting back on the load size. I agree with the vinegar in the rinse. If you don't have any vinegar on hand, give them an extra rinse. We put so much in to clean our wash, we forget all this stuff must be rinsed out.
