Since I did this for a very brief stint in my "varied career choices" (this means that was the only job I was able to get at the time, and I didn't last long at it, either), I simply tell them, "No thanks, not interested" and hang up. I know from experience, the telemarketer takes no offense, just goes to the next name/number on his/her list (we just took a page of the phone book and called every number on the page when I was doing this work...that's how simple it was, then). If I answer the phone and it's one of those even-more-annoying-recorded-messages, I don't bother saying anything, I just hang up.

When I have know it was a telemarketer by their first few words, I say " You have reached a live person,, if you wish to talk to an answering machine please hang up and try your call again" then hang up.
My favourite response to people selling newspapers is to tell them I'd love to receive such and such publication as long as it comes in braille. Usually there's a moment of silence followed by an apology.

Usually your parents are not at the phone when a telemarketer calls. You will most likely pick up the phone. They then will ask if the parent is there. You then need to say that they are not there and please call back later to the phone that they called at. Then politely say...Goodbye sir!

It is called the Armadillo effect. When someone wants something from you, you turn it back around on them. For example, say one of your relatives wants to borrow some money, well, you turn right back around and tell them that you were just about to ask if you could borrow some money from them because you are broke because you had some unexpected expense. Just start complaining about things in your life and they will hurry up and end the conversation. as for the telemarketer, as someone said previously, act like you want to sell them something. Tell them that you just started your business and you want to know if they will buy something from you because you really dont have any money. You will get a chance to get a kick out of this too. Dont be rude to them, remember, they have to make a livivng to. We all make the world go round!

Recently, they are calling off the hook for the newspapers here... So, they call and ask for my husband by his first name...which is an absolute mans name...and I say yes this is him and it totally throws them off.
My brother thrives on telemarketers calling him...some of the funniest stories he has to tell involves telemarketers!

I just say "sorry, I am not interested", and hang up. Don't forget to sign up for the (do not call list) so that the telemarketers will not call you at all or not as much.

I hate that !!!! In the past I used to be real polite and answer their questions but then they wouldn't stop calling me and driving me insane, so lately if they do call I cut them off straight away by saying "Not interested bye" in a loud voice and hang up straight away! I used to feel bad about that but I've toughened up.

Can't wait till they call. I'll use a fake voice and keep them on the phone for as long as possible. It's a great stress reliever.
