Hi guys, I am wanting to do some traveling out of the US. Most hotels though only offer wireless Internet. I do not know how this works. Do I go through Verizon Wireless? I dont even think they reach Mexico or Europe, etc. When a motel in Cancun lets say offers wireless internet ... exactly how do I get that Internet with a desktop computer? What do I need to do back here in the states and when Im in Mexico? Thanks a lot ===

Your comouter needs to have a wireless card in it to receive the wireless signal. You would go to your wireless setup and create a new connection, your computer will then search for the closest wireless signal and you will then configure it to work on your computer. This applies to desktops and laptops. The items that are needed are a Wireless or WIFI card installed in either.

Kainoa's right, just to expand, there are two main types of cards:

USB (easiest to use, especially for a desktop) and built in PCI cards.

The PCI ones, for desktops, would have to be manually installed... it wouldn't be too hard to do but it would be annoying (though on laptops they usually have the slot for it on the side so you can easily slide it in and remove it as you want).

USB, you just plug it into the computer, install the drivers, and you're good to go. No removing the case or anything like that. It's just easier.
